I'm just a...

sucker for pain

I remember the first time I heard this original song. My friend, Amanda Jetton, usually does her birthday party at the drive-ins, and as she's kind of like a sister to me, I always go. This time it was my birthday and when asked by a friend what I'd like to do, I opted to take a play out of her playbook and hit the drive-ins for Suicide Squad, which had just come out. I'm a huge comic book nerd, so it was pretty perfect for me and lots of my friends came out to watch the movie with me.
Anyway, at the end of the movie, this song plays, "Sucker for Pain," by Wiz Khalifa & Lil Wayne. I've been a Christian long enough that I don't really take in the lyrics anymore, and the more foul language I hear, the more my brain begins to intentionally ignore English. However, what still rang through to me, of course, was the music. I could still hear the flow of the rappers and the harmonies. I could still feel the beat rockin' through my head. I fell in love immediately. I knew I wanted to do something with this song, I just didn't know what, and it wasn't until the next year that God gave me the idea for the song. I rewrote the song and recorded all the vocals myself at my house.
In Luke 14, Jesus explains that in order to be His disciple, a person must be willing choose Jesus over their mother and father, their sister and brother, their wife and children, and even their own lives! Jesus explains that any sacrifice, even the very crucifixion that He would endure, must be embraced in order to come after Him. Our possessions cannot hold us hostage either, and we must be willing, if necessary, to give up even those for Him. Now, Jesus was not asking anyone to do anything that He had not done already or would do later on. The idea was, if you wanted to be like Him and do what He does, you need to be prepared to run that race to the end no matter what you encounter, and Jesus set the standard pretty high. He set the standard by living without many possessions, not having His own place to live, only doing work that He is told to do, and even sacrificing His life as payment for the sins of the world, even while the the very humans He came to save (in this case, the Romans) scourged and crucified Him. Jesus was a sucker for pain. He took the insults from the religious leaders, the doubt and disobedience from His own disciples (and eventually their abandonment)... they spit on Him, hit Him in the face, beat Him, placed a crown of thorns on His head, forced Him to carry His own cross after all that, and finally crucified Him. He KNEW it was coming. He KNEW it was the Father's plan. He asked that if it be possible, that the Father would let these things pass from Him... that He wouldn't have to endure them... but He also made it quite clear to the Father that He would do as the Father wanted done... and He did. He GAVE Himself up. He TOOK the pain... willingly. If you are a true disciple of Jesus, you must be a sucker for pain like Him. This doesn't mean that you go looking for ways to suffer, but that when the time comes for you to suffer for the name of Jesus, you don't run from it. You embrace it. You PRAISE the Lord and count yourself blessed that you are considered worthy to suffer for Him.

Sucker for Pain
Written and performed by: J Lynch
(A parody of “Sucker for Pain by Lil’ Wayne & Wiz Kalifa)

HOOK
He rose for you.
Hold His hand through the flames.
He rose for you.
I’m a slave to His fame.
The world will chain you up.
The world will tie you down.
I’m just a sucker for pain.

VERSE 1
I’m a sucker for pain.
I got the Spirit in my heart and so I praise in my shackles.
I get this feelin’ that the war isn’t over
So I’m ready for the enemies tackles.
I know that Jesus is great. He saved us all from the grave.
And in the midst of these jackals,
We can stand in the fire, and we can climb any mountains,
And we can sing in the chapels.
He gives us power that can calm any storm
And you feel me, won’t you raise up your arms.
You can weather all the enemies rockets
The word of God is like a sword in your palm.

HOOK
He rose for you.
Hold His hand through the flames.
He rose for you.
I’m a slave to His fame.
The world will chain you up.
The world will tie you down.
I’m just a sucker for pain.

VERSE 2
Never relent. Never give up.
God’s word made the universe happen.
He loves you whether you accept or not.
He loves you more than anyone could’ve fathomed.
He sent His son to the cross and Jesus suffered the loss
To bring the freedom to captives.
So we can suffer the pain, we can take all the torture,
And put the Gospel in action.
He gives a power that can calm any storm
And if you feel me, won’t you raise up your arms.

VERSE 3
I’m a sucker for pain.
I got the Lord, the Messiah, in my heart. He’s a lion.
He keeps the enemy back even when they attack
So I never quit tryin’.
So you can hate me and mock me, but you ain’t gonna stop me
I’ma keep on preachin’
You can throw me in jail, you can break my legs,
But I’m a keep on reachin’.
He gives you power that can calm any storm
And you feel me, won’t you raise up your arms.
You can weather all the enemies rockets
The word of God is like a sword in your palm.

HOOK
He rose for you.
Hold His hand through the flames.
He rose for you.
I’m a slave to His fame.
The world will chain you up.
The world will tied you down.
I’m just a sucker for pain.
I’m just a sucker for pain.
